Shots fired by police in Dunwoody parking lot

Posted: Updated:

Dunwoody authorities said an officer opened fire after a man accused of stealing a car charged at police.

Witnesses said that someone called 911 after the driver of a Dodge Intrepid was acting suspicious at a Perimeter Station around 3:15 p.m.

According to Dunwoody police, when officers arrived and tapped on the window of the Intrepid, the driver attempted to flee.

"Once he sped off, he was spinning out of control. He bumped numerous cars, including a cop car and that is when they began to fire into the vehicle he was in because he was endangering the lives of everybody that was out here," said Cliff Pough, a witness.

Damage from apparent gunshots was seen on a Dodge Intrepid and several other vehicles.

"They fired shots. I'm positive they didn't hit him, but I think they just disabled the vehicle, but it was all within 10, 15 feet from us," said Jason Ortiz, another witness.

Eyewitnesses said that the suspect, identified as Robert Goodman, was dragged out of the car and hauled to jail.

Ginny McGraw's silver sedan was mangled when it was hit by the fleeing Intrepid. She works at Bassett Furniture, where she and other employees locked themselves into a back room when shots rang out.

"You think you're in a safe area, but today we weren't safe," said McGraw.

Goodman, 20, faces numerous charges including theft by receiving, two counts of aggravated assault against officer, aggravated assault against a third party, four counts of hit and run, two counts of damage to government property and possession of tool used in commission of a crime.

There were no reports of injuries, police said.
