Jay-Z joins pitch to redevelop Nassau Coliseum

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - Jay-Z, the businessman, is part of a group trying to renovate suburban New York's Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The music mogul attended a meeting Thursday on Long Island, where the media was briefed on four proposals to renovate the arena and surrounding property.

Nassau County officials have been trying to come up with a plan to redevelop the 40-year-old arena for many years.

Its primary tenant, the New York Islanders hockey team, is moving to the new arena in Brooklyn when its lease expires in 2015.

Jay-Z's Roc Nation is part of a group that built Brooklyn's Barclay's Arena and is bidding for the Long Island project.

He took photos with county officials but did not speak during the 30-minute presentation.

County officials are expected to decide this summer.

    Detectives from the Nassau County Homicide Squad are investigating an explosion that destroyed a boat, burned two docks, and killed the boat's owner in Manorhaven on Wednesday afternoon. Two dock workers and two boaters were gassing up a docked 33-foot Carver motor boat just after 2:45 p.m. when an explosion tore through the boat, setting it and the dock on fire, police said. Hogan was reportedly a former NYPD captain.
