Suggestions for container gardens

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Pike Nurseries Melodie McDanal stopped by Good Day Atlanta on Friday with suggestions for a variety of container gardens, and also showed us how to plant a vegetable garden in a pot!

Container gardens are just as unique and diverse as gardens. There are different styles of container gardens for your patio, porch and even for inside your home. You can plant traditional flower container gardens or even a vegetable garden.

The Key to Container Garden Success

Drainage -- Make sure your pot or container has a hole in the bottom. If not, create drainage by adding a good layer of rock. We also recommend using some charcoal at the bottom of the container to soak up any extra water.

Soil -- Use a good quality potting mix in containers, not a planting mix. Pike Potting & Container Soil is light and nutrient rich, which is essential for container gardens.

Planting a Vegetable/Edible Garden in Pots
All you really need is a sunny place and a pot to grow edibles. You can have a vegetable garden even if you live in an apartment!

Patio Edibles -- Dwarf, compact vegetable plants are ideal for pots and give you just as much produce.

  1. Tomatoes -- Tomatoes have a large vigorous root system, so be sure to choose a large pot.
  2. Peppers -- Choose from sweet bell peppers to hot jalapeno peppers. The pepper could be the "thriller" in a mixed container garden.
  3. Blueberries -- Dwarf varieties of blueberries that can grow in a pot.     Try the new 'Peach Sorbet' or 'Jelly Bean' blueberries.
  4. Raspberries -- You can even grow certain types of raspberries in a pot. Try the new thornless 'Raspberry Shortcake' raspberry.
  5. Squash, Cucumbers and other Vining Vegetables -- Grow vining vegetables vertically in a pot by adding stakes.
  6. Herbs -- Dill, onions, etc make perfect "thrillers" in mixed containers. Basil, sage, etc make perfect "fillers" in mixed containers. Mint loves to spread and can cause troubles in the garden - plant it in a pot and let it roam.
