Monticello man arrested after posing as Pink Floyd's David Gilmour

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KMSP) -

A man is accused of pretending to be a member of rock band Pink Floyd at a Minnesota hospital and racking up as much as $100,000 in unpaid medical bills.

Police say 53-year-old Phillip Schaeffer, of Monticello, went to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment April 20 and claimed he was Pink Floyd singer-guitarist David Gilmour -- and that he didn't have health insurance or money to pay the bill.

Schaeffer apparently told hospital employees the band was touring in Canada and had stopped in St. Cloud so he could get medical treatment. He was treated and released -- but not before signing an autograph.

Given that Pink Floyd has sold over 250 million albums around the world, hospital security was suspicious about the man's identity and flagged his medical records were flagged.

Schaeffer returned for more treatment several days later with a Lloyds of London insurance card in hand; however, a security guard looked up David Gilmour's photo online and found it didn't match the man in the hospital. When Schaeffer was confronted by police, he admitted he wasn't Gilmour.

Ironically, hospitals can't refuse to treat someone in need -- so the impersonation wasn't necessary.

Schaeffer was booked into the Stearns County Jail and is waiting a charge of theft by swindle while investigators confirm the number of services he received.

At the Electric Fetus in downtown St. Paul, owner Andy Valenty told FOX 9 News the news of the impersonation left him feeling the opposite of comfortably numb.

"Basically an absurd situation that could only happen in a place like this," he said. "Might walk in with a fake English accent -- might work fine for the first 10 minutes."
