A semi crash caused major backups in both directions on I-94 by the Lowry Hill Tunnel Wednesday morning.
Another vehicle slid off the road into eastbound I-94 just outside of the Lowry Tunnel. It was stopped alongside the road near the semi causing major delays through 8:30 a.m.
Both I-94 eastbound and westbound have reopened, but traffic flow could remain slow in both directions.
Traffic delays on eastbound I-94 stretched all the way to Broadway Avenue for a majority of the morning commute.
Officials are looking to see what caused the semi to jump the median at the southeast end of the tunnel. The tunnel has been closed the past two nights for tune-ups including new light installation and rail fixes.
Closures were scheduled to lift at 5 a.m. The semi crashed at about 5:45 a.m. Wednesday. The Minnesota Department of Transportation says there is no indication that the cleaning was connected to the morning's crashes.
