Star Wars-themed blood drive honors 7-year-old with heart defect

EDINA, Minn. (KMSP) -

People came from near and far, far away to give blood in honor of a 7-year-old boy who was born with a congenital heart defect and had to have his left hand amputated.

The Star Wars-themed blood drive honoring George Lagerstrom was held at Our Lady of Grace Church in Edina on Tuesday because his parents wanted to help replace the 120 pints of blood the boy has needed during surgeries.

Lagerstrom is still recovering at Gillette Children's Hospital. He has spent several months in the intensive care unit, but he hopes to transition back home soon.

Someday, Lagerstrom may need a heart transplant.
