Atlanta sidewalk vendors protest recent crackdown

ATLANTA (AP) - A small group of sidewalk vendors gathered outside Atlanta City Hall to protest a recent crackdown on vending.

About 15 people demonstrated Tuesday, asking the mayor and city council to relax restrictions and let them get back to selling their goods.

Atlanta police in March told sidewalk vendors that they were in violation of a city ordinance that prohibits the obstruction of city sidewalks through the sale or display of goods. Police said the action was necessary after a judge struck down ordinances that consolidated public property vending through a single private company.

Some of the vendors who demonstrated in front of city hall say they've been sidewalk vendors for years. They say the crackdown has left them with no way to earn a living.
