PHILADELPHIA -

Random violence can strike any neighborhood. But when it's captured on camera-- still and video—you get the sense of what it's like to live under a constant threat.

Such was the story at the corner of Auburn and Amber streets in Philadelphia's Kensington section around 6 p.m. Friday.

Two independent journalists filming a documentary about life in Kensington, when they witnessed a fatal drive-by shooting.

Video and still images capture the chaos, seconds after a 24-year-old man on a bicycle fired shots into a Cadillac carrying a male driver and his passenger.

Police happened to witness the shooting, and quickly caught and charged Daniel Walker of the 1900 block of E. Wishart in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Theodore Cossum of the 2200 block of William Street.

Cossum's 27-year-old male passenger was badly wounded in the shooting.

On Tuesday, just across the intersection of Auburn and Amber, Robert Peterson, 71, and his daughter Lynn, 48, were hard at work preparing their annual community garden.

But they weren't thinking about the re-birth symbolized by their planting of cabbage and onions, sweat peas and peppers.

"It's scary to come out sometimes," Lynn told FOX 29s Bruce Gordon, "but, hey, that's life."

"Always something," said Robert, shaking his head. Nothing good? "Nah..."

On the video, you can see "Bernice"- she wouldn't give her last name- snatch a small child off the sidewalk and into her home— unsure the shooting had ended.

The shooting victim crashed the Cadillac into a tree right in front of Ronald Gentry's home.

"I knew he was shot and I just told him to hold on," said Gentry with a deep sigh. "I said, 'hold on, young man, hold on.' And obviously he didn't-- he didn't hold on…"

Neighbors say scenes like this one don't happen every day.

But they happen often enough.

Some say they keep their children indoors.

Others say they'd move if they could.

As for the Petersons?

Gordon asked Lynn whether she was ever too afraid to come out and do her gardening.

"No," she said, "because I can just lock the gate and close myself in and run in the back."

A little sanctuary from the threat of violence? "Yeah. Yes it is."

And a small symbol of life, in a place where it can end all too quickly.
