ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KMSP) -

A 13-year-old girl from St. Cloud, Minn. was killed when the SUV she was riding in went airborne and struck a tree off Highway 10 in Benton County Monday evening.

Ellie Sovada, a 7th-grader at St. Cloud Cathedral, was returning from a middle school track meet in Little Falls with a friend and her friend's father, said school president Mike Mullin.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, 59-year-old Philip Boyle was driving south on Highway 10 around 7:26 p.m. when his Chevy Suburban went off the road to the right, struck a road approach, went airborne and struck a tree on the passenger's side.

The preliminary crash report shows Sovada was wearing her seatbelt and was sitting in the back seat at the time of the crash.

Boyle and his 12-year-old daughter, Sofia, were taken to the hospital with serious but non- life-threatening injuries.

Mullin said St. Cloud Cathedral has postponed and canceled some events involving 7th grade students.
