It all started with a call to 911, says the Long Beach Police Department. A man calling for help, because he said, another man had just pointed a gun at him.
When officers arrived at the Eddie Jr Market at Artesia and Butler Avenue in North Long Beach, they quickly spotted a man fitting the suspect's description. But they say when they tried to talk him when he took off running and they followed.
During that short chase, in the alley behind the store, the officers say the man took out a gun, leading one the officers to shoot him.
The suspect - the coroner hasn't released his name yet - later died at Long Beach Memorial. A handgun was found, say police, in the alley where he was shot.
Today, a few people gathered behind the market to mourn the man. No one wanted to speak to the media.
Investigators hope that if someone in the neighborhood of Artesia and Butler Saturday night saw what happened they'll give detectives a call.
Meanwhile, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. This as the LA County District Attorney's office conducts a separate investigation.
