Academy of Global Citizenship teaches wellness, sustainability on SW Side

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A Chicago school has an environmental approach to education. They're taking green to a new extreme, offering students organic meals made from scratch and daily yoga sessions.

Located on the Southwest Side at 47th and Knox, the Academy of Global Citizenship is a stand-alone charter school. AGC founder and executive director Sarah Elizabeth Ippel spoke on the school's mission: Empowering young minds that will lead the community in the future.

Director of Sustainability and Global Education Dan Schnitzer said they chose the neighborhood to offer their programs to one of the most undeserved neighborhoods in the city.

A dedicated kitchen staff creates breakfast and lunch from locally sourced produce to give the kids a hearty start to their day and a healthy midday meal. After that, students attend a morning yoga session to get centered, relax and give teachers a chance to check in with them.

Later in the day, the children learn about sustainability and responsibility by participating in activities like transplanting their own vegetable seedlings in their own gardens or raising chickens.

Dir. Schnitzer and the entire school hope they might take the lessons they learn in school and implement them into their daily lives, in an area that may not have the best access to fresh food. They also hope these lessons and practices will begin to permeate the entire public school system.
