Cops: Jersey City man with explosive components is no threat - KMSP-TV

NJ man talks about arrest for explosive components

Posted: Updated:

Jersey City cops said the local resident accused of having bomb-making materials in his home is not a threat. He told Fox 5 that he was only making fireworks but admits it was "dumb."

Mykyta Panasenko, 27, admitted to Fox 5's Dan Bowens that he made the explosives in his apartment, brought them on a New Jersey Transit train, and blew them up in upstate New York April 7. He said his roommate thought his hobby was strange and contacted the authorities.

Panasenko said he now realizes that it was a "dumb move."

The FBI searched the apartment and questioned him. Parasanko said he told them what he did. They took the Pyrodex, which is a kind of gunpowder. He told Fox 5 that he easily purchased it at a gun store and learned how to make the make the fireworks after watching some YouTube videos.

A week after the FBI interviewed him, Jersey City Police arrested him on the same day of the Boston Marathon bombings. But authorities said Panasenko has no connection to the Boston bombings whatsover.

Police charged Panasenko with possession of destructive devices and creating a risk of a widespread damage. He was issued a summons complaint and was not jailed because cops do not consider him a threat to anyone.

Panasenko, a native of Ukraine, is now staying with his parents in south New Jersey. He insisted he meant no harm.

Boaters in Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey are keeping an eye out for an unwanted visitor lurking underwater: a 14- or 15-foot-ong snake, possibly a green anaconda. Several people have seen the reptile, which has probably holed up in a drain pipe. Reptile specialists are also searching the lake for signs of the snake. So far no more sightings have been reported.
