VIKINGS DRAFT: Cordarrelle Patterson, Xavier Rhodes, Shariff Floyd

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (KMSP) -

Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman has proved to be shrewd when it comes to the draft. He did it again as the Vikings selected two defensive players with their 23rd and 25th picks, then traded back into the first round giving up their second, third, fourth and seventh round selection (52,83, 102 &229) for Tennessee wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson.

Patterson was listed as the second receiver behind Tavon Austin on the Vikings draft board. The playmaker from Tennessee. Patterson played one year with the Vols after two years in junior college. While at Tennessee, Patterson caught 46 passes for 778 yards and five touchdowns.

Defensive tackle was on their draft wish list coming into the draft. And by most accounts Florida tackle Sharrif Floyd would have been far gone by the time the Vikings picked at 23.

Floyd slid, and the 6'3 297 pound athletic prospect was quickly sniped by the Vikings with the first of their two first round selections. NFL Network's Mike Mayock had Floyd taken No. 3 overall by Oakland.

Two picks later, the Vikings selected Xavier Rhodes, a physical cornerback from Florida State. Rhodes was pegged by most as an early teen pick and the Vikings top cornerback on the board ahead of Desmond Trufant.

Rhodes is a physical cornerback that will fit into the scheme immediately. With the NFC North loaded with big receivers, Rhodes will find himself matched against Calvin Johnson, Brandon Marshall and Jordy Nelson.
