Alexandria Officer Peter Laboy makes first visit to police headquarters since release from hospital

Posted: Updated:

Two months after he was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his head, Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy returned to police headquarters Thursday.

Laboy came home from the hospital Tuesday in a condition many thought they would never see him in again. He was smiling, walking and talking while wearing a hockey helmet with a Superman logo.

On Thursday, Laboy was wearing that same helmet as he arrived at headquarters to see friends and colleagues who pulled together and prayed for something like this.

Laboy received a motorcycle escort when he returned home from the hospital Tuesday afternoon and he got another one Thursday. He arrived at headquarters behind his buddies who have been so worried about him.

"He is so far beyond what anybody thought, particularly when we saw him the day of the incident, we were all thinking the worst, and to see him now, again, the doctors are even saying this is new territory for them because no one has recovered as quickly as we are seeing,” said Alexandria Police Sergeant Brian Thompson.

Officer Laboy, 45, was on his motorcycle and attempting to pull over a taxicab when he was shot once in the head.

The bullet fragmented and only a portion of the projectile went into his brain.

On Tuesday, FOX 5 was there when Officer Laboy came home for an emotional reunion with his family and close friends on the force who also had a surprise.

The old Mercedes that had been sitting in his driveway was a junker no more.

"His emotions are all back, his expressions are back, his humor is certainly back, so he is making jokes with us,” said Sgt. Thompson. “It's been remarkable to see.”

Sgt. Thompson was leading the escort Thursday -- riding Laboy’s Harley.

Although everyone is hopeful Officer Laboy will make a full recovery, there is still a long way to go. He still faces some surgery and will have to wear that helmet for a while.

Otherwise, he's the same old Pete.
