MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (KMSP) -

As the family of 16-year-old Anna Hurd continues to struggle with the teen's slaying in Maplewood, the teen's mother is speaking out on the lack of domestic violence education and victim services.

Hurd was found stabbed to death on a Maplewood trail on Feb. 23, the same day she was supposed to move to Texas to live with her mother. Her 17-year-old boyfriend, Anthony Mitchell, was arrested and is now facing murder charges.

"Domestic violence has been in my family for as long as I can remember, back to my grandparents," Jennifer Hutchings told FOX 9 News. "The night my daughter was murdered at 2 a.m., she had no place to go."

Hutchings told FOX 9 News she tried to put herself in her daughter's shoes. In the process, she realized there aren't enough shelters or educational resources available to domestic violence victims, especially teens.

Saying she won't wait for a conviction in her daughter's case to channel her energy toward helping other victims, Hutchings has teamed up with The Dwelling Place, a Minnesota shelter trying to expand.

"We really can reach the teens and the kids to have them grow up and have a hopeful life," said Jody Cowdin, with Dwelling Place. "That's what we are all about -- to break that generational cycle."

Hutchings returned to Minnesota this week for what would have been Anna Hurd's 17th birthday.

"Anna was such a good, caring person," she said. "I just want to keep on her caring nature because this is what she would do if say, this happened to one of her friends. Anna would be sitting here doing this."

Hurd's family is attending a performance at the University of Minnesota aimed at increasing awareness of domestic violence, and the Dwelling Place will play a large role.

"When I did a version of this project last year, it moved me in a way I didn't expect," said Laura Hynes. "I felt like I found a way, through music, to speak about a social justice issue."

On Sunday, Hutchings will celebrate her daughter's life without her, but in the form of a fundraiser complete with a balloon release and cupcakes.

"Anna was my life, and I just want her name associated with beauty instead of what happened to her," Hutchings told FOX 9 News.

As for Mitchell, he remains in juvenile detention, but the certification hearing to determine whether he will be tried as an adult is set for May 10.
