Going high tech: Mesa PD unveils new app

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -

The Mesa Police Department unveiled some new technology Thursday aimed at keeping residents safer and officers more accountable.

The free smartphone app gives you access to news photos, videos, events, alerts and crime information.  You can communicate with police via Facebook and Twitter and submit anonymous tips.

It can also show you crimes that have happened in your neighborhood on an interactive map.

The department is also investing in cameras worn by officers on safety glasses.

"People accusing us of misuse of force. I think our officers are safer because people realize they're on video and they're actually being held accountable by videotape for their actions," said Mesa Police Chief Frank Milstead.

The department is also showing off a mobile identification system, software that shares information with neighboring states, and an electronic ticketing device that prints citations on site – so you don't have to wait weeks for processing and paying fines.

We're a very lean department so we have to use technology to make up for deficiency in staff," said Milstead.

The $30,000 app didn't cost taxpayers a dime. It was funded by forfeited assets.
