50-year sentence for man in Gary murder of ‘friend’

CROWN POINT, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Michigan City, Ind., man who admitted he murdered a 17-year-old friend during an argument has been sentenced to prison.

Lake Superior Court Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr sentenced Aaron Di-Shon Windom, 27, to 50 years in prison after he admitted in court last month that he killed Deandre Wilson Feb. 19, 2011, outside a home in the 4300 block of West 23rd Avenue in Gary, Ind.

Deputy prosecutor Monica Rogina said the coroner's report shows that Wilson was shot at least six times, including in the head and face, with additional shots to the back. A total of 11 bullet casings were found at the scene.

"He executed this 17-year-old kid in front of this apartment building," said Rogina, who argued for the maximum 50-year sentence outlined in the plea agreement based on Windom's extensive criminal history, which includes five juvenile adjudications and nine prior felony convictions.

Two days before he was murdered, Wilson was a passenger in the stolen car Windom was driving when he fired shots at a family as they were driving on the Borman Expressway in Lake Station. Windom is serving a 20-year sentence in that case.

Defense attorney Robert Varga said the Gary homicide stemmed from an argument that began inside the residence over the Dodge Charger Windom was driving. Windom and Wilson took their dispute outside. "In the heat of that moment, he snapped," Varga said.

Windom said he wanted to apologize to Wilson's family, who did not attend the sentencing hearing on Wednesday. "I made a mistake. I lost a friend," Windom said, noting he is full of regret.

Stefaniak ordered Windom to serve the 50-year sentence after he completes the 20-year sentence in the expressway shooting incident.

Windom said he plans to appeal.
