I absolutely flat out love this time of year…wait, I say that about every time of year when it comes to sports.
But this time I really mean it!
The Vikings will continue to swing for a Super Bowl, something that hasn't happened since I was four years old. I don't recall too much about that 1976-77 team. Since then, I have watched with optimism every year since I turned seven. The year was 1980 and Tommy Kramer was the man.
I along with thousands of other fans of the franchise have been pulled through the mud, punched in the solar plexus and finally have been put in the Camel Clutch by the Iron Sheik while having to listen to him talk about how bad we are.
Yeah, okay I'm humbled.
I don't pretend to be a draft expert, but know we have holes all over the place. Inside linebacker, cornerback, wide receiver just to name three. Listening to sports talk radio and the experts talk, there are plenty of opinions of which players to take and which players to stay away from.
While I don't care that Manti Te'o had a made up girlfriend, my bigger concern is if he himself disappears on the field. I don't care that much about off the field shenanigans and am more concerned about if the guy can play on Sundays.
The same people who are upset with Percy Harvin heading to the Puget Sound are the same people who want Randy Moss for a third time. Percy is an elite level talent, but if he didn't want to be here, then we'll find someone else to catch his share of the passes. We won't find another Percy Harvin just like we didn't find another Randy Moss. Look, the reality is when it comes to the draft you must have faith in the guy at the top that is calling the shots. In the Vikings case I do. Rick Spielman has a vision and a track record of success, at least here in Minnesota.
So over the next 24 hours, I'll be glued into the local sports chatter on radio and what the national people say, even though they don't really care about us and…well the feeling is more than mutual. They will all pretend to know exactly what is going on and when the smoke clears will give everyone a grade for their work or lack thereof. Talk at the water cooler on Friday will come back to football and fans of the Bears, Packers, Vikings and the one cheering for the Lions will talk about how the guys they know absolutely nothing about will help take their teams to the postseason glory.
I for one can't wait for our boss who is a Packer fans to bring the Manti jokes. I'll find something clever and witty to counter with. I always do. If there is one thing I have learned through my years of suffering as a Vikings fan it's that you can't take them too seriously…or seriously at all.
Tomorrow starts our year!!!
