PHILADELPHIA -

One person died after a car went off the road and into the Schuylkill River Tuesday evening.

According to emergency responders, the victim was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the two men were inside of the car and parked in a lot when the driver mistakenly placed the car in drive when it should have been in reverse. According to investigators, the driver accelerated, causing the vehicle to go into the water.

The driver died while a passenger was able to get out of the car. Police have identified the driver as 31-year-old Devon Womack of Philadelphia.

Two rowers saw the car go into the river and paddled over to the area. The rowers managed to free the passenger of the car by breaking through the window with a fire extinguisher.

Video from SkyFOX showed emergency crews in the area of Kelly Drive and Fountain Green Drive getting into the water shortly after 5 p.m., around the time the car went into the river.

Emergency responders were quick to praise the actions of the two rowers. Rescuers say had it not been for their efforts, the other victim could have died too.
