One person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting in Clayton County on Monday, and police are searching for the gunman.
Clayton police worked late into the night trying to catch the gunman who opened fire on the three men. The gun fire rang out just after 8 p.m. near a Texaco station on Highway 42 in Rex.
"The officers were directed into the wood line and found three individuals shot. All three were seriously shot," said Sgt. K. T. Hughes of the Clayton County Police Department.
Two of the victims were rushed to Atlanta Medical Center. Keith Andre Davis was transported by helicopter, and Sheldon Derrell Thomas was taken by ambulance.
"The third gentleman who was back there was deceased. As of right now we don't know cause of the shooting," said Hughes.
Friends identified the fatal victim as 38-year-old Charles Avent. Christina Rico said that Avent was her boyfriend.
"He was a great person, he had a big heart, he loved everybody," Rico said. "He cared about everybody before he cared about himself."
Detectives working the case say they hope to talk to the surviving victims. Police say it's common for people to be in the wooded area.
"This is a path that is used by people on a daily basis. It actually leads back to a mobile home park that is directly behind the Texaco gas station," Hughes said.
Rico said that she is worried about her 7-year-old son facing a life without his father.
"He keeps asking, ‘what happened to my daddy,' because he knows he got shot, but I haven't told him yet, he's not with us anymore, that he's in a better place and he don't have to worry about anything," Rico said.
Police say they have not been able to identify the shooter. They ask anyone with information to call 678-610-4711.
