On Monday, a grand jury in Anoka County indicted 23-year-old Alberto Palmer with first-degree murder in the death of 18-year-old Brittany Clardy, who was found dead inside a towed car at an impound lot in February.

Palmer was originally charged with second-degree murder on March 8, nearly one month after Clardy was last seen alive. On Monday, Palmer made his first appearance in Anoka County District Court to be indicted on the elevated charge.

The criminal complaint filed in March accuses Palmer of murdering Clardy on Feb. 11 after luring her through prostitution ads Clardy posted on Backpage.com. On Feb. 24, Clardy's body was found hidden under a blanket in her mother's car, which had been towed to an impound lot in Columbia Heights.

"This was a horrible crime and we feel the evidence supports a first-degree murder charge," said Tony Palumbo, Anoka County Attorney.

Judge Daniel OFallon also affirmed that Palmer's bail would remain at $2 million. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 27.

Palmer has numerous warrants for his arrest in Georgia for a nearly identical crime. Police investigators say he and an accomplice kidnapped and raped two separate women they met through Backpage.com just three months before his arrest in Minnesota.
