Minnesota Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman joined Sports Director Jim Rich on FOX 9 Sports Primetime to talk about the upcoming NFL Draft which begins Thursday night.
On selecting lower in this years draft:
I think the biggest difference this year will come to fruition a little bit on that third day. Where last year we were picking on that third day you're at the top of those rounds.
On the psychological aspect of the draft:
We've really tried to be honed in on that aspect. From what we do from a psychological testing, what we do from our interview process I know we feel really confident if there are players that we bring into the building that do have issues that our support staff that we have in place will do a fantastic job to keep them on the right track. There's times that we've passed guys that other people have taken, but we just did not feel comfortable as an organization to bring that player to be a part of our team
How character plays in the process:
Just trying to find out what he is made of. I know that's really big with Coach Frazier as well. He's a big part of this process. You get a sense, I don't know if you can say you're looking for this or that. I think being in that business for as long as I have, and doing as many interviews as we have over the years that you just get a sense or a feel and sometimes sitting there talking to a person, you can tell what type of person that guy is or how important football is to him or what type of character that guys is or if he did have issues or a slip-up here or there, did he learn from those.
Filling a need at linebacker:
There's more than one middle linebacker in this draft we think could come in and help us. We've been going through that process and we think there's value throughout the draft at that position.
When you're drafting you may be looking at not only there, but if it's a need that's going to come up in 2014. He may be a potential role player initially but knowing and looking at what your roster's going to look like in 2014, this guy will definitely be a starter for you.
My goal is to always have 10 draft picks. That gives you the flexibility to maneuver on draft day. I could just tell you, it will be very interesting because the direction people expect you to go, there's a pretty good chance we may not go in those directions.
