Earth Day 2013 marks three years since the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Deepwater Horizon disaster killed 11 people and the ensuing oil spill is the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history.

The oil spill continued for almost three months, with a total estimated discharge of five million barrels of oil.

A Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement report found the oil spill and deaths "were the result of poor risk management, last minute changes to plans, failure to observe and respond to critical indicators, inadequate well control response, and insufficient emergency bridge response training."
