DETROIT (WJBK) -

We all understand that parents want to protect their children from everyone and everything, but one parent said another went way too far when it comes to fighting your kids' battles.

DPD said it seems a DPS parent did not just come East English Village Preparatory Academy to pick up her daughters on Tuesday.  It was more like she came to pick a fight.

"My wife [and I]... we see our daughter sitting there with scratches on her face, bleeding from the eye," said James Edwards.  "Principal said she just got jumped, but nobody knew how.  Nobody knew that this parent had jumped her."

His 16-year-old daughter is seen on video getting punched, pulled and dragged by two of her schoolmates and their mother was in the middle of the mess.  Watch Andrea Isom's video report to see portions of that footage.

"They had an argument and it was nothing.  It was a girl argument.  It should never [have] escalated to where a parent [would] get involved," Edwards said.  "She should've done more stopping and walking away than beating.  Instead she choose to help fight."

The janitor jumped in to break up the brawl.  It appears other people thought it was a joke.  Security did not see it, and dad said school administrators did not have much information to share with him at all.

"No one's actually said anything.  They can't tell me anything about this parent.  They can't tell me how she entered," Edwards said.

The 42-year-old mother was arrested on assault and battery charges, jailed a few days and then released.

As far as how she got inside the brand new school building, we're told she followed behind members of the track team as they walked through the doors, which is against the rules.  You are supposed to sign in with security.

Edwards is really disappointed about all this.  The video has been posted on Facebook, and he calls it a poor example of parenting for everyone to see.

"She's literally beating her in the back of her head.  She's helping her daughters beat my daughter and then go around and drag her and cuss her out," Edwards said.  "That's not acceptable in society.  That's not the way we should be, not as parents, we should be teaching our children better than this."

Edwards does plan to press charges, and DPS is deciding what punishments are appropriate for the students involved in the fight.
