CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Two people were killed in a chain-reaction, seven-vehicle crash on the Tri-State Tollway near Elmhurst on Thursday, as heavy rain and flooding shut down many major thoroughfares.

Krishnan Kollacseril, 72, and Aley Kizhakkeanthakulam, 56, both of Des Plaines, were killed when their vehicle was rear-ended by a semi-truck, which caused a chain reaction involving four more cars.

The multi-vehicle crash took place at 5:47 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-294, just before I-290 at Lake. According to preliminary police reports, a semi-truck hit the rear end of a Toyota, causing a chain reaction involving two Hondas, a Ford and a Nissan.

Two of the occupants of the Toyota were pronounced dead at an area hospital emergency room, state police said.

The two right lanes were blocked for most of the day on the southbound side of the Tri-State as emergency crews clean up the area and investigate the accident.
