DETROIT (WJBK) -

64-year-old Jessie Clarke is recovering after being mauled by two dogs Tuesday on Detroit's east side.  She suffered deep wounds to her head and neck.

"We'll take all the prayers we can get.  She's in stable condition," said Anthony Clarke, the victim's son.

Neighbors tried to get the dogs away from her by beating them with sticks, but the dogs wouldn't stop.  Dante Dasaro with Detroit Dog Rescue said that could have made the attack worse.

"To beat a dog with a stick when it's aggressively attacking something, you're raising its energy level.  It's going to get him to be even more aggressive.  It's the fight, it's the challenge," he explained.

The mauling continued until an off-duty police officer driving by the bloody scene saw what was happening.  He pulled out his weapon and fired two shots at a brown dog causing it to back off, but he was forced to fire at a white dog three times before it finally released and ran into the vacant Cleveland Intermediate High School across the street.

Neighbors described the dogs as pit bulls.

18 hours after the attack, the white dog was found alive at the school where neighbors complain construction workers would leave the vicious dogs overnight to protect the building from scrappers.  One of the construction workers told Fox 2's Taryn Asher the dogs that guard the school are not the same dogs that attacked Clarke.

Stray dogs have plagued Detroit for years.  Dasaro said residents need to know what to do to protect themselves such as walking in groups, not making eye contact with aggressive dogs and staying calm.

"Keep your hands and your body tight.  If you fall to the ground, role in a ball [and] cover your face and neck.  Dogs will go for inner arms or any limb that's out.  It will go for the groin or the neck area.  Stay calm, and don't move.  If you move, you raise that dog's aggression level, and it wants to keep coming at you just like it would its prey," he explained.

Detroit Animal Control provided Fox 2 with the following statement:

"Preliminary evidence suggests that the two dogs that attacked the citizen yesterday [Tuesday] were not strays.  There is an ongoing investigation underway to determine ownership of the dogs that were responsible for the attack.  A police officer shot and killed one of the dogs; the other was caught by Detroit Animal Control today [Wednesday] and is being kept at the Detroit Animal Control Shelter, in compliance with State rabies quarantine law."
