Kirk meets with families of Newtown victims

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Sen. Mark Kirk has met with families of victims of last year's Connecticut school shooting.

Wednesday's meeting occurred on the same day as a scheduled vote on whether to expand background checks for gun purchases. Kirk is a co-sponsor of the legislation.

The Illinois Republican says he wanted to learn about the victims of the shootings in Newtown, Conn., and hear the families' stories first-hand.

He says the families -- and others affected by violence -- will remain in his prayers. He says he's hopeful his Senate colleagues will rally around "common-sense, bipartisan solutions to reduce gun violence while protecting Second Amendment rights."

Twenty elementary school children and six staff members were killed in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
