Rear Admiral Sandy Adams: Our Leaders Treat All Sailors Alike

(FOX 11) Rear Admiral Sandra Adams, Deputy Commander, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, will be visiting Los Angeles to meet with Mayor Villaraigosa and other corporate, education and community leaders during Navy Awareness Days from April 16-18, 2013.  During her visit, Admiral Adams will be discussing the role of the Navy and how its global mission impacts businesses and residents locally here in Los Angeles.

The Admiral, whose home is in Long Beach, can discuss the global Navy mission, L.A.'s Navy heritage, and the Navy's focus on promoting STEM education in the schools, and can provide insight with a local angle into the operation of the world's most powerful Navy.

She discussed the advantages of the Navy's STEM program. The STEM Program at USNA prepares midshipmen participants for various intellectual challenges by creating opportunities for midshipmen to learn STEM theory and application, as well as reinforcing the lessons they have learned in the classroom. The STEM Program uniquely offers midshipmen a chance to not only participate in, but lead in the classroom.

Involvement in STEM includes learning how to set up and execute an experiment, fielding challenging questions, and developing an understanding of the underlying theory. These experiences strengthen creative problem solving skills and the ability to respond to a situation that was not anticipated.

Recognizing that a healthy science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce is critical to meeting the Navy and Marine Corps' greatest challenges, the Department of Navy (DoN) is committed to doubling its investment in STEM over the next five years. This commitment answers a national call by President Obama to improve our country's STEM education over the next decade.

The DoN's STEM Roadmap is built around five priorities that combine best-in-class experiences for students along-side the needs of the Navy for a STEM workforce pipeline. Initiatives include exciting new programs that will increase participation by students and teachers, allow for hands-on and meaningful learning experiences, and meet the underserved where they live. The five priorities are:

Inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers

Engage students and build their STEM confidence and skills through hands-on learning activities that incorporate Naval-relevant content

Educate students to be well prepared for employment in STEM careers that support the Navy and Marine Corps

Employ, retain and develop Naval STEM professionals

Collaborate on STEM efforts across the Department of Navy, the federal government and best practice organizations.
