Woman takes on fitness challenge, loses 130 pounds

ROME, Ga. -

The gym can be a scary place if you're not in shape. At over 300 pounds, Rome school bus driver Tracy Swann was terrified people would judge her. She faced her fears, and lost 130 pounds!

Swann hadn't been in a gym for years, and she did not know where to begin. When she walked into her local gym, something clicked and she's never looked back.

For years, Swann believed "big" was just who she was.

"I had told people, "I'm fat, and I'm fine, and I'm fun!"  I wasn't," said Swann.

In the spring of 2011, the 39-year-old mother of two lost her brother, then sister, then father to heart disease. Her whole family had struggled with weight.

"I woke up one morning, looked in the mirror and said, "Something has got to give. Something has got to give.  I am not who I want to be," Swann said.

Swann read about a fitness challenge at the Rome Athletic Club.

"I couldn't have walked into a scarier place that moment. I walked in at that moment with the expectation of II am going to fail," said Swann. "But walking through that door was the greatest thing I've ever done."

She was a size 28, and weighed about 300 pounds.

"I couldn't hide anything, I had on T-shirts and shorts and everything hanging out," said Swann

But instead of judging Tracy, the club embraced her.

"They looked at me on the inside and said, ‘This is someone who cares.  This is someone who wants to change,'" Swann said.

So, they began – jumping jacks, push-ups, kettleball and flipping a tire.

"It didn't come overnight. I've been doing this for a year. They showed me, "This is what you do."  And then they walk away, and I got…It's just me," said Swann.

Swann found her fire, and thinks we all have it in us.

"Stop living defeated. I lived defeated for 21 years," Swann said. "I'm living a dream, I am living a dream! And I keep thinking to myself, what's next?  What's next?"

Her goal now is to become a group fitness trainer, and she's competed in several 5K races.
