Project Turns Donated Canned Goods Into Art

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 11 / AP) An annual food drive to benefit a northern Indiana food bank is turning donated canned goods into works of art.

Teams of high school students have built sculptures including "Peanuts" character Snoopy's doghouse and a sand castle as part of the Community Harvest Food Bank's Canstruction.

The Journal Gazette reports each team has a sponsor who helps with the design and donates $1,000 toward the cost of the canned food. Students also collect canned goods. About 85,000 cans have been donated so far.

Prizes are given for most cans used in construction, best use of labels and even best nutritious value of the foods used.

The sculptures will be on exhibit at the Glenbrook Square mall through Sunday.
