SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Plumbers have been working almost 24/7 since the rain started, and they've been focusing a lot on flooded basements.

"I didn't think too much of it, but when I got up this morning and I went down there to get something out I stepped in the water," says Judith Vargo.

Her basement looks like a lot of others in metro Detroit right now, filled with water and a plumber coming to the rescue.

"When you get this much rain like we've had -- an inch or two of rain in 48 hours, 72 hours -- the systems can't handle all of that water," says Steve Klochko of Plumbing Professors. He says that even after the rain stops, basement backups will continue for at least the next few days.

However, there are a few things you can do to make sure this doesn't happen to you.

He recommends that you make sure that your gutters and downspouts are at least three to four feet away from the house so that water coming off the roof doesn't get close to the house. Make sure your sump pump's working if you have one, and then listen to your plumbing.

"Your plumbing will talk to you, believe it or not," Klochko says. "It will gurgle, it will make funny noises or you'll smell something you've never smelled. That usually means something different is happening. And if you react to that, you can prevent a flooded basement."

Calling the professionals now and then doesn't hurt, either.
