'Creeper' Fondling Women In Their Bedrooms

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Police in Northeast Philly are anxious to find the man who has been crawling into open windows and fondling women in their bedrooms as they sleep.

They say they're working hard to crack this case because the details really worry them.  This is a guy who's not intimidated by other people in the room, including one victim's husband.

And he doesn't care that, in both cases, young children were right by their mothers' sides.

The area is supposed to be safer from the kind of crime that plagues other parts of the city.  But two break-ins, and an attempted entry early Friday morning, are terrifying residents on the long, quiet block.

One resident woke to find the man rattling his front door.

"He was trying to push it in at first, then he tried to open the doorknob. And then when I started hollering, then that's when he, I guess, he saw somebody was up and he took off."

The victim did not want to be identified, nor did his wife, who told FOX 29, "Now I'm not going to sleep and stay up all night, 'cause I have a son, an 8-year-old son."

Police are worried, too, because in every case young children were home.

In the first two cases, detectives believe the same man fondled women as they slept in their beds.

The first time it happened, on April 3 on the 10000 block of Jeanes Street, the victim's husband and toddler were in bed with her.

"He's caressing her leg," explained Capt. John Darby, who heads the Philadelphia Police Department's Special Victims Unit.

"Her screams immediately alert other family members, and that male was chased from the property," Darby said.

"I'm actually surprised," Tatiana Maroz told FOX 29. She lives on the same block as all the victims. "I never thought that it would be something like that going on in this neighborhood."

Her neighbor Debbie Dodson agreed, saying, "I wouldn't like it, I definitely wouldn't like it.  I would be really shocked."

Asked what kind of guy would do that, Dodson answered, "A pervert."

The second incident happened exactly one week later on Wednesday, just a few doors down on the 10000 block of Ferndale Street.

The man made what police call "indecent contact" with the victim as her child slept by her side.  She screamed, he ran.

But police worry next time, maybe he won't.

"If a child awakens and whimpers or cries or something like that, quite frankly we're not quite sure what he might be, what he might potentially do," Capt. Darby cautioned.

Police are looking for a young tall white guy in his 20s or early 30s, 5-foot-ten to six feet tall, with a buzz cut or shaved head.  He may or may not have a goatee.  And he may be wearing a black hooded zip-front sweatshirt.  Detectives believe he may possibly live in that neighborhood.
