CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Two 15-year-old students have been charged with felonies after an unloaded shotgun was found in one of their lockers at a northwest suburban alternative high school Thursday, and police say one teen was selling the gun to the other.

Police received a tip about 11:30 a.m. that a student brought a weapon to Gifford Street High School at 53 S. Gifford St. in Elgin, according to Elgin police.

Police worked with school authorities to secure students and search the campus, police said. The unloaded shotgun was found inside a student's locker. No ammunition was found.

A 15-year-old student from Streamwood was taken into custody Thursday, police said. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a gang member, unlawful use of a weapon within 1,000 feet of a school, and unlawful use of a weapon, all Class 3 felonies, according to police.

On Friday, a second 15-year-old was arrested and charged with the same felonies, police said. Officers learned the firearm was sold from one student to the other while on school grounds.

Both teens will be been detained at the Kane County Youth Home pending detention hearings, police said. Both have been charged as juveniles, according to police and prosecutors.

Gifford Street High is an alternative school with students from five other district high schools, according to the school's website.

Elgin Police Chief Jeffrey Swoboda reminded residents that anyone who wants to provide a tip to police can call the crime line at (847) 695-4195 or text 847411 and including ELGINPD in the beginning of the text.
