Police say they've arrested four men they believe abducted individuals in Buckhead and forced them to withdraw cash from ATMs.
According to FOX 5's Morse Diggs, the first break came on March 28 when police picked up Jamari Carroll who was in a victim's car in South Carolina. The additional four arrests included a man named Steven Brown, who was seen in surveillance video in one of the robberies.
That surveillance video, along with timely tips, helped Atlanta police put some prime robbery kidnapping suspects behind bars. A commander of the Buckhead zone said the suspects were literally caught in the act in one incident at Piedmont Road near Peachtree Street.
"I am just saying they attempted a kidnapping and robbery. We received the information very quickly. We had officers in the area, very close. We were able to get a description very quickly and give that out to Georgia State Patrol and our other officers. We were able to get behind them very quickly and make the stop," said Lt. R. Woody of the Atlanta Police Department.
In the Buckhead community, thieves have found targets among residents and shoppers that frequent the area. Woody was asked if the abductions and robberies are tied to gang activity.
"We are looking at the possibility that there are links because of gang membership. We're still investigating that. We're working with the gang unit, the FBI gang unit task force along with the APD gang unit. We're working with both of those to see if there are any connections," Woody said.
In addition to Brown, the others arrested were Clevere Jones, Jonorris Gardner and Jano Taylor-Cline. Jones, Gardner, and Cline face several charges, including aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, kidnapping, and armed robbery.
The suspects either live or hang out in Lithonia. Investigators say they're still looking at the DeKalb County community for additional suspects tied to the crimes in Buckhead.
