Security Guard Shot During Argument, Police Investigating

Posted: Updated:
North Hills, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) Detectives today were investigating the fatal shooting of a 48-year-old security guard in a strip mall in North Hills. The shooting broke out at 15025 Roscoe Boulevard near Noble Avenue around 9:50 p.m. Thursday, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department's Mission Division.

A clerk at a liquor store heard a gunshot and called 911, then went outside and found the uniformed guard lying in a walkway leading to an alley between two stores, according to the statement.

The guard was unconscious, not breathing and bleeding when officers and paramedics reached him, said Officer Christopher No of the LAPD's Media Relations Division. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. A witness told police he saw the guard arguing with a man just prior to the shooting, according to the Mission Station statement.

Police brought in a search dog to look for evidence and detectives canvassed the mall's stores in search of leads to the shooter's identity, police said. "The guard was a good man, trying to make a living in an honorable way,'' said Mission Station commanding officer Capt. Todd Chamberlain. "He was trying to keep the area free of problems so customers could patronize the markets. No doubt he has family. These shootings are very sad and unnecessary.''

Employees of local businesses told investigators the guard had patrolled the mall for at least eight years. The motive for the shooting was unclear and police were urging anyone with information that might lead them to the culprit to call Detective Ryan Verna of the LAPD's Mission Homicide Unit at (818) 838-9976.
