Senate To Debate Bipartisan Gun Control Bill

Posted: Updated:

The Senate has cleared a major hurdle for gun control legislation.

Senators voted to allow debate on the issue, following the announcement of a bipartisan deal on background checks.

Experts say the debate over gun control could be extensive, possibly stretching into next week and beyond.

The National Rifle Association and some Republicans oppose additional background checks on gun buyers.

New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg missed the opening of the gun debate Thursday, prompting more concerns about his health.

He is under doctor's orders to stay at home while he recovers from fatigue and muscle weakness.

Lautenberg has long opposed the NRA. He released a statement saying, in part, "I am disappointed I will not be present. ... I am, however, gratified that my legislation to ban high-capacity ammunition magazines will be one of the key amendments offered to this bill."
