Jazz at Lincoln Center launching youth band

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jazz at Lincoln Center is starting a tuition-free orchestra for high school students from the New York metropolitan area.

The youth band is slated to start in September.

The Wall Street Journal says it will have 18 to 21 students who will attend weekly rehearsals. The students will be coached by Jazz at Lincoln Center musicians, including artistic director and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.

The orchestra is expected to draw up to 25 percent of its students from underserved communities. Applications are due May 10

The youth orchestra will perform at Carnegie Hall in March 2014.

Jazz at Lincoln Center already has a program for students in grades six through eight called the Middle School Jazz Academy.
