Ice storm knocks out power in Worthington, Minn.

WORTHINGTON, Minn. (KMSP) -

The city of Worthington, Minn. is dealing with widespread power outages and property damage after a winter storm hit the area Tuesday.

As much as 90 percent of the city was without power Wednesday morning and 911 dispatchers were receiving calls for help with sheltering.

By 4:30 p.m on Wednesday, 3,000 residents were still without power.

The Minnesota Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is assisting local leaders with damage assessments.

A state of emergency has been declared in the area, and Gov. Mark Dayton has authorized the Minnesota National Guard to help.

Worthington is in far southwestern Minnesota, off Interstate 90, about 175 miles from the Twin Cities.
