Finding the time to stay healthy

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

For Yasmin Bano, her challenge was time. She didn't have any. She says she started putting on a little weight in her early 30s, then got pregnant and the weight stuck around.

She didn't really mind it. But four years ago, she realized it was now or never: She needed to make a change.

Bano knows what it means to be busy. At 42, she's juggling a husband, a little girl, a job.

"Then you go to work, then you come back, and by the time you come back, you're already so tired," said Bano.

A petite 5'1", Yasmin gained about 30 to 40 pounds during her pregnancy, and never lost it. It didn't seem like a big deal until one Sunday in 2008 when she took her then 4-year-old daughter to the park.

"And it was hard for me to catch up with her. She was running and I was just shocked that I was out of breath," Bano said.

That's when se decided to do something about her weight.

"I want to live long. I want to live healthy. I want to be with her. So I just put my sneakers and went out," said Bano.

She started walking, as fast as she could.

"And I was out of breath within ten to 15 minutes," Bano said.

Bano went back out the next day, and the next, and the next.

"I did not give up. I did not stay home and say, ‘The weather is bad, I can't go,'" said Bano.

She walked before dawn, while her husband and daughter still in bed.

"I strongly believe that if you really need something, you really want something, you don't find the time, you make the time. Right?  And it becomes a second nature," Bano said.

She climbs stairs, exercises in her living room, or exercises at a local park. She's dropped about 60 pounds, and now she is a personal trainer.

"Four years later, I feel like, I think I feel better than how I used to feel when I was 20 years old," said Bano.

Bano is a trainer at L.A. Fitness, and a huge believer in strength training, especially for women. She tells clients who don't have a lot of time to have a gym pack and keep it in their car, so they're always ready.
