PHILADELPHIA -

The president of IAFF Local 22 says Captain Michael Goodwin was a natural born leader and a hero whose valor will never be forgotten.

President Bill Gault issued a statement Sunday following the death of Goodwin. The 30-year Philadelphia firefighter veteran lost his life when a third floor roof collapsed during a fire in the city's Queen Village neighborhood Saturday.

"The month of April has been especially cruel to us. Tuesday marks one year since the tragic deaths of Lt. Robert Neary and Daniel Sweeney and now, nearly a year to the day, we've lost Mike," a statement read.

Gault says the union plans to honor Goodwin, Neary and Sweeney in a 12 p.m. ceremony Tuesday at city hall.

"We ask all citizens to remember the ultimate sacrifice these brave men have made and keep their families in your prayers."

Firefighter Andrew Godlewski was injured Saturday trying to save Goodwin's life, fire officials said. Godlewski was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for burns to his hands. He was released Sunday.
