Duluth prison escapees arrested at Burnsville hotel

BURNSVILLE, Minn. (KMSP) -

Two white collar criminals who escaped from a federal prison in Duluth, Minn. last week were arrested early Friday morning at a hotel in Burnsville, Minn.

U.S. Marshals located and arrested Gerald Greenfield and Michael Krzyzaniak just after 1 a.m. Friday. Greenfield and Krzyzaniak were both wanted on federal arrest warrants for escaping from the Duluth Federal Prison Camp on March 30th.

Officers from the Burnsville Police Department assisted with the investigation.

Krzyzaniak, 64, was serving 12 years for swindling $26 million through an investment scam targeting the rich. Greenfield, 67, was serving four years after helping in a multi-million-dollar mortgage hustle with the developer of the Sexton Lofts in downtown Minneapolis.

The duo was on the run for nearly a week

Tip information led investigators to the hotel where Krzyzaniak and Greenfield were staying together. The pair were arrested without incident and booked into the Ramsey County Jail before an initial appearance in United States District Court.

Duluth prison officials realized both men went missing last Saturday during a routine head count at the minimum-security prison, which does not have fences and uses an honor system under which prisoners agree to not leave the camp.
