17-year-old charged with rape, abduction in Manassas

Posted: Updated:

A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged with raping a woman who was walking through the teen's Manassas neighborhood last Thursday night.

The suspect was taken into custody Tuesday and charged by Prince William County Police as a juvenile. His name has not been released.

Prince William County Police say investigators have enough evidence to charge the teen with not only the rape, but the attempted robbery of a barbershop the same day.

Just after noon on March 28, Prince William County Police say the 17-year-old now in custody walked into the Maplewood Barbershop in the 8300 block of Shoppers Square, pulled out a handgun and attempted a robbery.

But the stickup went wrong when the employees screamed and he ran from the store.

It is just a block or two from his home.

Approximately 11 hours later, police say the teen abducted a 31-year-old Herndon woman walking along Maplewood Drive and dragged her into a wooded area behind Vermont Place and attacked her.

"The suspect did, following the rape, take the victim’s cell phone from her and some money before he fled," said Officer Jonathan Perok with Prince William County Police.

It is unclear if the cell phone helped police track the suspect. Investigators aren't saying exactly what led them to the teen.

But a neighbor on Vermont Place says police were searching the teen’s home Tuesday night, just steps from where the rape took place.

"The victim, she was 31 [years old] from Herndon, was visiting a friend who lives in the apartment complex nearby where the incident took place,” said Officer Perok. “As she was getting out of her car parked on the street … the suspect approached her with a gun and took her to a little secluded area.”

Police say investigators can also prove the teen was involved in the March 1 robbery of the same barber shop he attempted to rob on the day of the rape.

In that stickup, police say two men, one armed with a gun, announced a robbery, but became impatient and instead grabbed an employee’s cell phone and ran.

The owner of the barber shop declined to comment.

A neighbor who watched police search the teen’s home says they were inside the residence for several hours.

Police say the teen was arrested with the assistance of the Northern Virginia Gang Task Force, but wouldn't say if the crimes were related to gang activity.
