EAGAN, Minn. (KMSP) -

CaringBridge founder and CEO Sona Mehring has announced her candidacy for U.S. Congress in the 2nd District, challenging Republican incumbent Rep. John Kline.

CaringBridge is a website tool that allows family and friends to connect, share news and receive support as they deal with health issues.

"When a friend was in a time of crisis, I stepped up with an innovative idea to help her solve a problem. That idea became CaringBridge and has helped millions of families get through challenging times," Mehring said in her mission statement. "Well, there is a crisis in Washington and I am ready to step up again with innovative solutions. Instead of helping solve the problem, career politicians are part of that gridlock and are out of touch with the people they are elected to represent."

Mehring will run as a Democrat. She announced her decision Tuesday to step down as CEO of CaringBridge to focus on her congressional campaign.

Former DFL state representative Mike Obermueller is also challenging Kline for the 2nd District seat.
