CTU protests CPS school closings, parents voice safety concerns

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Chicago Board of Education is scheduled to meet Wednesday morning, and the plan to close 54 CPS elementary schools will be on the agenda.

The Chicago Teachers Union and its supporters staged a protest outside school board headquarters at Adams and Clark during that meeting.

CTU officials said its demonstration will be visible and vocal in its opposition to the proposed school closings. They talked about how the consolidation could put CPS kids in dangerous territory.

As they hit the streets, they called for Mayor Emanuel and members of the school board to walk the streets too, to see what these students may encounter on their way to school. FOX 32's Darlene Hill walked to school with some parents from the group Raise Your Hand on Tuesday, to do just that.

One group of kids would have to travel 12 additional blocks to their designated welcoming school. Parents were disturbed by what they saw: Needles on the ground and drug users who hang around in their direct path to school.

Student safety is something parents will want to bring up at Wednesday's board meeting.

CPS Chief Barbara Byrd Bennett has promised that the displaced kids will go to better schools.

The plan affects 30,000 individuals in the CPS community, and would be the single largest bout of school closings in U.S. history. It is the district's effort to close a $1 billion budget deficit.
