MEDFORD LAKES, N.J. -

It's easy to spot a real traffic stop when Medford Lakes police pull someone over in a marked car. But investigators say that's not what happened on Algonquin Trail last week, when a man in dark clothing approached four people in a parked car.

"He walked up with a flashlight, identified himself as a police officer, inquired if they had any drugs or alcohol inside the vehicle," Det. John McGinnis told FOX 29.

The man demanded to see the female drivers' identification. She provided it and said there were no drugs or booze in the car. The man returned the ID, but never showed her any official identification.

"The victim basically said I'm going to call the police and the subject ran off," Det. McGinnis explained.

"Scary," was all Charlotte Garrison could say when she heard the news.

She's lived in Medford Lakes for 40 years. She says that while some folks still leave their doors unlocked at night, she is extra careful, especially when an unmarked vehicle or plainclothes officer approaches.

"You hear so much about women being pulled over and then maybe they don't get home," Garrison said.

"I'd be upset, kind of scary, especially in Medford Lakes," said Pete Scout, a local accountant.

News of this latest police impersonator incident has drivers even more cautious and on their toes.

"That's really strange and kind of scary to know there's people like that around," said Amy Dooley outside a local ice cream shop she visited with her daughter and a friend.

Det. McGinnis had some advice for drivers.

"If it's not marked, the vehicle emergency lights should be built into the vehicle," he said. "If they're in plainclothes, ask for ID, if you're not comfortable."

Police say they do have some leads in the case, but no arrest has been made.
