3 dead in Zimmerman home identified as family of Minn. Nat'l Guard Sgt.

The Minnesota National Guard released a statement Monday confirming three deaths in a Zimmerman home were family members of Guard member Sgt. 1st Class Mark F. Shields.

Ramsey County medical examiners identified 35-year-old Stephanie Shields, 7-year-old Nolan Shields, and 6-year-old Josephine Shields as those found deceased inside the home on 5th Street; however, officials still have not released how the three died.

No suspects are being sought, and officials do not believe there is any danger to the community.

The statement from the Minnesota National Guard read in part:

"Shields' military records indicate that he has served with the Minnesota National Guard since Dec. 16, 1989. Currently, he is the full-time readiness noncommissioned officer for the 850th Horizontal Engineer Company, Minnesota National Guard. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from Sept. 2004 to Nov. 2005.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time."

Also on Monday, the superintendent of Zimmerman Elementary School was notified by the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office that two of its students were among the dead.

"Josephine Shields and her brother, Nolan, were part of our Zimmerman Elementary School family and we are deeply saddened," said Principal Susan Johnston.

Students will return from spring break on Tuesday. Grief counselors will be available and school officials say they also have resource materials for families to help parents speak with their children about the deaths.

Deputies surrounded the home at 13309 5th Ave S. on Sunday and blocked access to the area after a family member of the deceased discovered the bodies.

Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott said in a release that deputies arrived within minutes of the call, which came in at 10:03 a.m. on Easter Sunday.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was also called in to assist in the investigation.
