Klobuchar, Walz talk legislation for veterans' mental health misdiagnoses

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar and U.S. Congressman Tim Walz are set to discuss legislation for veterans to receive the benefits they've been denied due to discharge after mental health misdiagnoses.

A press release cites a report that says over 31,000 veterans may have been improperly discharged for personality and adjustment disorders which denies them the right to Veterans Administration (VA) health care or benefits, even though these veterans might be suffering from service-connected Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including PTSD resulting from sexual assault while in the military.

Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Larry Shellito and Ramsey County Veterans Services staff will join Klobuchar and Walz to discuss the Service Members Mental Health Review Act that the legislators hope will prevent future misdiagnoses.

Discussion is set for Monday, April 1 at 10:00 a.m. at Ramsey County Veterans Services in St. Paul.
