CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A Chicago Police detective shot and critically wounded a teenage boy who allegedly pointed a gun at the police during a Friday afternoon foot chase in the Pill Mill neighborhood.

Area South detectives heard shots fired near East 95th Street and South Jeffrey Boulevard about 3:15 p.m. and called for backup as they followed three fleeing north, according to a Chicago Police statement.

A resident who did not want to be identified, says her son saw the commotion and was later interviewed by the police.

"They were just standing outside, seen someone running, that's all he told the police," she told FOX 32 News.

One of the suspects was taken into custody in the 2000 block of East 94th Street and detectives continued to pursue the two other two, police said.

The detectives ordered one of the remaining suspects to drop a gun, but instead the suspect pointed it at detectives, who opened fire, Chicago Police said.

That suspect, 17-year-old Marvin Thompson, was shot in the leg and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, authorities said.

His great grandmother got the shocking news.

"My neighbor called and told me that my grandson had got shot," Bessie Parham says. "I feel angry and upset."

Parham says it all happened in a matter of minutes.

"He had just left my house and he was going to McDonalds to get him some food and then the next 15 minutes after he walked out my door my neighbor called me," Parham says.

"It's crazy," the offender's cousin admits about the violence. "We do need to stop the violence but I hope he's alright."

No officers were injured and a weapon was recovered at the scene, according to the statement.

The third subject escaped and is not in custody Friday evening.

The Independent Police Review Authority and Area South detectives are investigating.
