LOWER MERION TWP., Pa. -

Lower Merion Police issued an alert to residents after 10 confirmed burglaries and four attempted burglaries were reported in about a week's time.

The latest happened Wednesday afternoon on the 300 block of Baird Street.

Sue Rubin's friend was one of the burglary victims.

"She was freaked out."

She raced to her vacationing friends house on the 700 block of Periwinkle Lane after she got a call about the alarm going off.

Police say thieves busted through the rear basement door, ransacked the house and stole about $49,000 worth of jewelry that included Rolex and Bulgari watches.

Rubin says the crooks tried to buy some time by dismantling the alarm once inside.

"From what  we understand, the horns were pulled down."

A homeowner in a gated Villanova  community was also victimized by the burglars. Police say a house on  the 700 block of Canterbury was hit for nearly $500,000 dollars in designer bags and jewelry.

Cartier rings, Hermes and Gucci Berkin bags among the bounty.

"Burglars follow the money," said a resident in one of the burglarized neighborhoods. "That's pretty amazing."

Police believe more than  one person or group is responsible because the crimes are spread out and there are different patterns.

The common thread: the crooks enter through unlocked windows or doors.
