Sandy Contributing To Allergy Season's Early Assault On Senses

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Like it or not the allergy season is here. And the moisture from Hurricane Sandy is actually making the beginning of this allergy season that much worse.

Dr. Mike Cirigliano, of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, says he is already getting calls to his office from people dealing with allergies.

Dr. Mike joined "Good Day" on Wednesday morning to talk more about the problem and what you can do about it.

"It might be the worse seasonal allergy year on record, if some people's predictions are correct," Dr. Mike said.

He said sarcastically that the hurricane is the gift that keeps giving because now, with all of that moisture and mold that were created, you're going to have high pollen counts.

A U.S. allergy map shows we're already in the moderate to high region the southeastern part of Pennsylvania and northern Delaware. We're going to be in for a lot of pollen and allergy symptoms.

"What you need to do is avoid pollen, as best as you can," Dr. Mike said.

If the allergens get brought up into the nasal passages, and they lead to significant histamine release, that causes the runny nose, runny eyes, sneezing, all of those things.

"The key is avoidance," Dr, Mike said. "One of the things that I preach all the time is to make sure and use saline – big fan of the sinus rinse."

The doctor said he harps on flushing out the allergens all the time at his practice, and if you do it right that can help keep the nasal passages clear so you don't get sinus infections.
